Muffled Oars: A Story of St. Mary’s County During the Civil War
Written by the late Annie Chunn Candee in the 1940s, Muffled Oars: A Story of St. Mary’s County During the Civil Waris the first novel to be published by the St. Mary's County Historical Society. A novel of intrigue and romance, it is the story of a family caught between sympathies toward the South and Union occupation.
During the Civil War, Maryland was divided with significant Confederate leanings, especially in its Counties of Charles and St. Mary’s in the Southern part of the state. President Lincoln took legally-questionable steps to keep Maryland in the Union, including placing Baltimore under Martial Law, arresting members of the Maryland General Assembly to prevent secession, suspending the writ of Habeas Corpus, and stationing Union troops throughout State. Union troops were especially prevalent in Southern Maryland to keep sympathizers and supplies from crossing the Potomac River to reinforce the Confederate army. The book's title, Muffled Oars, refers to the practice of putting cloth between the oars and oarlocks of a boat to silence its passage across the river. Despite Union attempts to stem the flow, men and supplies continued.
Muffled Oars tells that story.

Maryland Voices of the Civil War by Charles W. Mitchell
In Maryland Voices of the Civil War, historian Charles W. Mitchell tells the compelling story of how Maryland African Americans escaped from slavery and fought for the Union and their freedom alongside white soldiers. He reinforces the notion that Maryland's Southern sympathies―while genuine―never seriously threatened to bring about a Confederate Maryland. He draws upon hundreds of letters, diaries, and period newspapers―many previously unpublished―to portray the passions of a wide variety of people―merchants, slaves, soldiers, politicians, freedmen, women, clergy, slave owners, civic leaders, and children―caught in the emotional vise of war.

A Confederate in Congress: The Civil War Treason Trial of Benjamin Gwinn Harris by J. Kastenberg
Born just outside Leonardtown, Benjamin Harris was a firebrand. Harris attended Yale College in the late 1820s, and Harvard Law School from 1829 to 1830. He served as member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1833 and 1836, and was admitted to the bar in 1840. Harris was removed from Yale after taking part in a student protest against the poor quality of the food in the campus housing.
Toward the end of the Civil War, Harris, then a sitting member of Congres, was arrested, tried, and found guilty in a military court of aiding and abetting paroled Confederate soldiers. He was, essentially, a Confederate serving in the US Congress, a vocal advocate of slavery and the rights of States to secede from the Union. This is the first-ever book to examine this unique chapter in Maryland's history.

Behind the Maryland Scene: Women of Influence 1600-1800
This book, authored by members of the Southern Maryland Regional Committee and guest Dames of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the State of Maryland, presents a few of these women. It is a lovely kaleidoscope of personalities from the Queen of England to the dedicated nuns who crossed the ocean to found the first religious convent in the English speaking America.
The Women in this book are only a few, but they are representative of all the others who came to the new world and carved a new path to freedom. They have much to teach each of us about personal responsibility to accomodate and contribute to the world in which we live.

Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Period to the Oyster Wars
Published in February 2020, Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay: From the Colonial Era to the Oyster Wars tells of the golden age of piracy, including Confederate privateers and oyster pirates. The maritime communities of the Chesapeake Bay are intimately tied to a fascinating history of intrigue, plunder and illicit commerce raiding. Dr Jamie Goodall, staff historian with the U.S. Army Center of Military History in Washington, DC, introduces infamous men like Edward "Blackbeard" Teach and "Black Sam" Bellamy, as well as lesser-known local figures like Gus Price and Berkeley Muse, whose tales of piracy are legendary from the harbor of Baltimore to the shores of Cape Charles.

Our Dear-Bought Liberty: Catholics and Religious Toleration in Early America by Michael Breidenbach
Based on ground-breaking research, Prof Michael Breidenbach of Ave Maria University places the Calverts and St Mary's County at the source of Religious Liberty in America. He details the physical, legal, and religious journey of Maryland Catholics and how they emphasized their church’s own traditions—rather than Enlightenment liberalism—to secure religious liberty which enabled their assimilation into American life. His research encourages us to revise our sense of who the American founders were.
A video recording of Prof Breidenbach's lecture on his book can be found on our Videos page.
