June is Busting Out All Over!
Temperatures are soaring. Kids are out of school. Trips to the pool and the beach are the order of the day. Nat King Cole's "Those lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer" plays in the heads of those of us old enough to remember. Complaints about humidity and mosquitos aside, it's a great time of year to be in St. Mary's County.
----------------------------------
Among the many good things to happen this month at your Historical Society is Margaret McAleer joining us as our new Archivist.
Some wonderful people have filled the archivist's chair in the past - Carol Moody and Elizabeth Mathews-Kern to name just two. With Margaret (aka Meg), we have again been blessed by a volunteer with extraordinary talent and experience.
Meg holds a PhD in History from Georgetown University and has held positions as both historian and archivist at the Library of Congress from 1991 through 2023. A Google search will bring you to a couple of C-Span programs in which she was featured along with other insights into her work and career.
With her husband, also an historian, Meg moved to Tall Timbers a couple of years ago. Now, as volunteering as the Historical Society's archivist, she brings exceptional experience and knowledge to our collections and projects. As she ramps up, she'll work with Director Tim Benson and alongside our other Archives volunteers.
We are delighted you're here, Meg!
The Historical Society team has planned a couple of events over the next months, so let's get to them.
75th Anniversary Celebration
This event is top-of-mind to all of us who make Tudor Hall our second home. No sooner had the belated edition of the May Tudor Hall Times gone out than reservations started coming in! We're approaching one-hundred and the "formal" invitations haven't even been mailed (members will receive them later this month).
The event is Friday, September 11th at The White Rose in Callaway and unlike our "normal" dinners, there will be live music, a served (plated) dinner, and an open bar. Coach Orlando "Tubby" Smith from Scotland, MD, is the featured speaker. He, along with a program that celebrates the past and anticipates the future, will make for a very fine evening. Our theme, by the way, is:

Live it and Love it we do!
You will learn more about the 75th Anniversary Celebration by clicking here, where you'll find a link to make reservations. And, importantly, if you're a business owner - or know one who is civic-minded - we'd love to have you partner with us to make this event even more than we expect it will be. Information is at the link.
Oh - and members: keep an eye out for your invitation in the mail. If the response to May Tudor Hall Times was any indication, we expect reservations will go fast.
A Fitting Cap to the July 4th Weekend
Director and Marketing Chair Steve Gass long has long had a dream that he's now turned into reality: music on Historic Tudor Hall's loggia.
"Music Under the Oaks" will cap the July 4th - and US Semiquincentennial - weekend at Tudor Hall on July 5th from 7:00p to 9:00p with performances by the Norris Brothers and St. Maries Choral Arts.
The program is open to everyone in St. Mary's County - members & non-members, young & old. Bring your folding chairs - throw a blanket on the grass - grab a bite from one of several food trucks - sit back - listen and enjoy some wonderful performers.
Reservations are not needed. You can learn more about the event and our super sponsors if you click right here.
Speaking of Those Lazy Days of Summer
The 2026 Summer Social is set for Friday, July 31st. Always a delight for members and their guests, this year will be no different.

Membership Chair Susan Dyer and her excellent Committee, along with the generosity of the Historical Society Directors, have come together to prepare for yet another wonderful afternoon of small talk and large, gossip, laughter, and just being among good friends.
While reservations are not absolutely necessary they are very much encouraged (you wouldn't want us to run out of beverages, would you?). Click you way over to the information and reservation page with this link and join us on the lawn or in the parlor.
Not a member of the Historical Society! How about becoming one? We're not only about history. . .
A Membership Form is attached below.
