The annual Summer Social took place on the last day of July. As is the case each year, Directors, Volunteers, and Staff pulled together to create an afternoon at which members can gather, enjoy the wonderful weather, share stories, and enjoy food and drink.

This year, we were surprised and delighted when Coach "Tubby" Smith and his wife Donna joined the Social. Coach Smith, who was in St. Mary's County to celebrate a birthday, was generous, conversing with guests, recalling his time as student and coach at Great Mills High School, and posing for photos, including this one with Historical Society President, Tim Heely. He will be back with us, of course, as the featured speaker at the 75th Anniversary Dinner in September.
The comradery at these socials--as well as at our Spring and Fall dinners has always impressed me. We are, I think, as much a social organization as we are an historical one. Perhaps it's because people who like this County's history also like each other. Whatever the reason, it is a pleasure to take part.

Historically Speaking
Mark your calendars for October 1st for the third Historically Speaking program of the year to take place at the Inn at Leonardtown.
Ms. Jennifer Brown, adjunct instructor of political science at Harford Community College and a member of Maryland Family Institute's Academic Advisory Board, will speak on "A Lasting Effect: Lessons from Maryland’s Early Educational History" revealing the religious and political influences that impacted the development of education in early Maryland history, and how that is important to our educational system today.
You can register for the program at this link. Admission is free and open to members and the public.
Ms. Brown wrote an interesting article in Maryland Matters entitled Maryland History...Relevant or a Relic. It is a short and thoughtful piece on why Maryland history matters (or should matter) to educating Maryland students.
Not a member of the Historical Society - then how about joining? We're not only about history. . .
