IT'S OUR ANNIVERSARY!

A week from this Friday, we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the St. Mary's County Historical Society. The response to joining our anniversary dinner has been overwhelming. Three-hundred guest have registered to attend making it one of the largest, if not the largest, event in the Historical Society's history.

We decided that the doors will open
at 5:30pm instead of 6:00 to give everyone a bit more time to mingle, grab an adult beverage or two, and not feel rushed. And in case you're uncertain exactly where The White Rose is, a map showing its location can be found at this link. The evening's program is full. But rest assured, you will have ample opportunity to socialize and enjoy your dinner. I'll make sure to include some photos from the evening in the October Tudor Hall Times.

Through the thoughtfulness of a long-time member and volunteer, we we were able to purchase an excellent new sound system for this and future occasions. It should [will] end the often-heard
complaint of not being able to hear the speaker.

On a personal note, it was a pleasure to be part of the Historical Society on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary. While many people contributed to the evening, at its center have been: Jason Babcock, Steve Gass, Tim Heely, John Houser, Dan Kerns, Marsha Williams, Mary Wolfe, and Christine Senese - plus excellent guidance from Patty Sparks of The White Rose. They each deserve recognition.

Historically Speaking

While our focus has been on the Anniversary Celebration, you don't want to miss the third Historically Speaking program of the year taking place at the Inn at Leonardtown on October 1st.

Ms. Jennifer Brown will speak on "A Lasting Effect: Lessons from Maryland’s Early Educational History". It is a topic which, as she will show, has consequences even to today. She will unpack the religious and political influences that impacted the development of education in early Maryland history, and how those influences impact our education system in the 21st Century.

Jennifer is an adjunct instructor of political science at Harford Community College and a member of Maryland Family Institute's Academic Advisory Board,

You can register for the program at this link. Admission is free and open to members and the public.

By the way, take a look at a short article Ms. Brown wrote in Maryland Matters entitled Maryland History...Relevant or a Relic. It is a thoughtful piece on why Maryland history matters (or should matter) in the education of Maryland school children.

Seventy-Five Years of Preserving and Interpreting the History of St. Mary's County 1951 - 2026
