We are constantly adding content to the Historical Society's website. Some Sections are accessible to the general public while others are reserved for members. Click on the links to be taken directly to the Section.

  • Local Newspapers:  Links to St. Mary's Beacon, Enterprise, and Gazette.  Searchable indices, online images.  Varies by publication and year.
  • Obituaries - Scans of our obituary files - over 40,000 entries!
  • Administration Bond Index - Charles Fenwick's transcription of bonds posted between 1805 and 1852.
  • Census Enumeration District Maps - identifies elections and census districts by year.
  • A Guide to the History of Slavery in Maryland - forty-four page publication of the Maryland State Archives and University of Maryland College Park
  • Sources for Studying the Landscape of Slavery  - Link to Website of St. Mary's College of Maryland providing links and background information for many primary sources.  Emphasis on St. Mary's County.
  • Provincial Rent Rolls & Debt Books - Rent rolls and debt books were records in which Lord Baltimore's agents kept track of the quit rents due him by county.

  • 2023 Annual Meeting & Dinner - At the 2023 Annual Meeting & Spring Dinner on May 5th, archivist and librarian Kent Randell spoke on the topic "Debunking Myths Concerning Surnames During the Era of Slavery".  This presentation includes audio of Mr. Randell's remarks and his slides.
