The Nautical Voyage of a St Marys’ County Local
Captain Angela Laaro embarked on her journey at the age of fourteen through Historic St. Mary City’s Terra Mariae Society program. Starting as a volunteer in the plantation exhibit area, she moved to the Maryland Dove under the mentorship of Captain Will Gates whom she replaced as skipper on July 13th of this year.
A 2015 St. Mary’s College of Maryland grad, Captain Laaro served as the Chef and Captain at Paradise Yacht Management. She has held roles as Fleet Manager and Captain at Buffalo Boat Tours, overseeing various sailing vessels on Lake Erie including a 72 ft Square Topsail Schooner, a 63 ft Double Decker Catamaran, and a 50 ft Pontoon. In 2020, Laaro Captained the Junk-rigged Schooner Summer Wind, a 49 ft steel-hulled vessel in Baltimore. She also gained experience on the tall ship Lynx, a 122-foot replica War of 1812 Square Topsail Schooner, serving as its Chief Mate.
