The Pete Himmelheber Award
The second Pete Himmelheber Award will be presented during the evening. The award is intended to honor the legacy of our late Director and Chronicles of St. Mary's editor, and was first presented last year to Mr. Al Gough.
The award recognizes individuals or groups who have contributed to the discover, preservation, and interpretation of St. Mary's County History. Nominees include academic and non-academic people whose passion for history and St. Mary's County are seen through writing, teaching, and media. Recipients are selected by the Board of Directors.
Carol Booker: The Farmer's Wife: A Revolting Murder - A Remarkable Year
The Farmer's Wife is the true story of a cold-blooded murder of a wife and mother in the tiny hamlet of Friendship in Anne Arundel County.
One reviewer wrote of the book: "Ms. Booker knows how to build suspense and cause the reader to be intrigued...With each book I learn more and more about the Maryland Chesapeake Bay region in the 19th century", while another said, "As I read this story I felt I was transported back to that time, reading an account of a long-ago murder as fresh as if it was in today's newspaper. Carol Booker has done a superb job of bringing this episode to life, with intense research and fluid writing. It's a short book, but it packs a big wallop".
Lawyer and journalist, Carol Booker has covered everything from civil rights to the civil war in Nigeria. After being graduated from Georgetown University law school, she served as counsel to public and international broadcasting groups, the environmental organization Greenpeace, and the US Commission on Civil Rights. She lives in Calvert County.
