The St. Mary's County Historical Society is pleased to offer the second in the new series, Stories from St. Mary's County. This series is intended to bring to our members and the public narrative and visual histories of the people, places, and events that shaped this County.
In 2021, then high-school student Regan Coombs produced and directed a series of short videos about historic places in St. Mary's County. She undertook the project to achieve the Gold Award, the Girl Scout's equivalent to an Eagle Scout honor. Since graduating from college, she is pursuing a career in video production.
In this, the first in our presentation of Regan's videos, she meets with Fr. Rob Maro and historian George Matisick to tour and learn the history of the oldest church in the original thirteen colonies (and perhaps East of the Mississippi), St. Francis Xavier, and The Newtowne Manor House, once the residence of Jesuit Missionaries. You can find her engaging video on our home page or by clicking on this link.
If you'd like to learn more about St. Francis Xavier Church and the Newtowne Manor House, we encourage you to consider purchasing Newtown's Collection of Oral Histories by Sarah Matisick Friends of Newtown Manor by calling 301.247.7416.
We hope you find Stories from St. Mary's County informative and entertaining. If you have a story about the County that you'd like to tell, please contact us at director@stmaryshistory.org |
