Volunteer!

As a non-profit organization, St. Mary's County Historical Society runs on volunteers.  We have many opportunities.  If you don't see something that exactly fits you, let us know what you enjoy doing, and we'll try to find a place for you.  Alternatively, if you see something that interests you, but you've never done it before, don't worry - we'll be glad to train you.    Some activities can be done from home.  Other require you to be at Tudor Hall.  Hours are flexible, but may need to be coordinated with building hours, and other people's availability.  We would love to have you join us!

Research Center - In the Society's research center are thousands of books, magazines, files, microfilms, and other records that document the county's rich history.  Volunteer opportunities include: cataloging new books into our library database, filing, transcribing, copying, scanning, assisting patrons with research or doing historical or genealogical research to benefit the organization.  Contact Joan Wise at research@stmaryshistory.org

Archives - In the Society's archives are an estimated 330,000 pages of papers, ledgers, diaries and other books, photographs, as well as other items that represent the history of St. Mary's County.  Volunteer opportunities include: cataloging new acquisitions, sorting and filing, scanning documents and photos, assisting with new exhibitions, maintaining the archives' database.  Contact Joan Wise at research@stmaryshistory.org

Volunteer opportunities include: creating social media posts, updating website content, assisting with email campaigns, designing flyers or brochures, taking photos or short videos at events, or brainstorming new ways to reach the community. Whether you’re a writer, designer, social media pro, tech-savvy, or just enthusiastic about spreading the word, there’s a role for you. Contact Steve Gass at marketing@stmaryshistory.org

Events - SMCHS sponsors many activities, programs, and events each year.  Examples are our spring and fall dinners, Historically Speaking events, representing the society at community events, and social events at Tudor Hall.  Volunteer opportunities include: planning, decorations, reception, setup/tear-down, audio/video, food and drink.  Contact Peter LaPorte at director@stmaryshistory.org
