Historically Speaking: The Story of the St. Inigoes Mission 1634 - 1994

The Story of the St. Inigoes Mission 1634 - 1994 by Father Francis Michael Walsh was begun in 1983 but not published - until now.

At this landmark Historically Speaking eventFr. Walsh will present the story of the St. Inigoes Mission from Maryland's founding to the 20th century, recalling persecution and struggles over faith, segregation, and achieving harmony among Black and white Catholics in St.
Mary's County.

We are honored that
Bishop Roy Campbell, Jr. of the Archdiocese of Washington will provide the Invocation and remarks at this important event.

Extensively updated, illustrated, with more than 780 endnotes, Fr. Walsh's history of the St. Inigoes Mission is of considerable importance to historians and all those interested in the history of St. Mary's County. It is an important story told by a man of deep faith.

In a pre-publication review, St. Mary's College of Maryland Associate Professor of History, Dr. Garrey Dennie,  wrote:

"Woven then into the fabric of the story Father Walsh tells is an enduring optimism. For a very long time, race did indeed overcome faith as the marker of Catholic identity in St. Inigoes. But the possibility of positive change, the idea that within the faith itself Black and White Catholics could arrive at shared understanding of how to pursue their best lives, Black Catholics never abandoned that goal. Neither did Father Walsh. That is the message of this work."

In her forward,
Merideth M. TaylorProfessor Emerita of St. Mary’s College of Maryland, author, and a Director of the Unified Committee for Afro-American Contributions, said:

"I believe that anyone interested in Maryland history, segregation and civil rights struggles in the Church, or Black Catholicism will find this unusually detailed story of one rural parish of interest. The Story of the Saint Inigoes Mission (1634-1994) is an important founding story told here in a personable way by a man of passionate beliefs."
